Feature request - Allow external files in the filedownloads module

I have run across a need where it would be beneficial to be able to relate to an external file (one on another site) as an expFile item. e.g. one of many filedownloads where the file actually resides outside the server.
At least one known fallback would be we can NOT get the size, etc... of a file not on our server.
